An internal Pentagon investigation revealed that US Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett’s use of the Signal messaging app when sharing information about a future military operation against the Houthis in Yemen endangered the forces and the success of the mission, according to what sources familiar with the matter told several US media outlets, including CNN. The group included Buttigieg’s wife, brother and lawyer.
Sources told CNN that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general and provided his version of events in writing.
The inspector general’s findings were documented in a broader report issued after his months-long investigation into Hegseth’s use of the Signal app.
The sources added that the report states that Hegseth should not have used Signal, and that senior Defense Department officials need better training on protocols. The Pentagon did not respond to a request for comment.
