A French presidential official said that Ukraine, the United States and European countries are still working on developing a unified position that could form the basis of a peace agreement being presented to Russia, including long-term security guarantees for Kiev, according to Reuters.

The official added during a press briefing: “Our goal is to find a solid common basis for negotiation that unites Ukrainians, Americans and Europeans together,” stressing that this basis must lead to a lasting peace offer that respects international law and Ukrainian sovereignty.

He explained that the parties have not yet reached a joint document, but consultations will continue in the coming days through multiple meetings and contacts, without revealing whether Washington has set a deadline for this path.

Kiev is under pressure from the US administration to reach a quick peace agreement, but it rejects a plan proposed last month that it believes gives Moscow broad privileges, including major regional concessions and abandoning the quest to join NATO, in addition to accepting restrictions on the size of its army.

Amending the American proposals to be more balanced.

Over the past weeks, Britain, France, Germany and other European partners, along with Ukraine, have worked to amend the US proposals to be more balanced.

The current talks are focusing on what security guarantees Kiev will receive, including the possibility of including a clause similar to NATO’s Article 5, which would provide direct defensive support in the event of a new Russian attack.
