The Board of Directors of Akhbar Al-Youm Foundation issued a decision to establish a specialized center for research and studies within the institution, in implementation of the mandates of Engineer Abdel Sadiq Al-Shorbaji, Chairman of the National Press Authority. The Board also decided to choose Dr. Ali El-Din Hilal, professor of political science and former Minister of Youth, as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and to appoint journalist writer Ahmed Al-Khatib as director of the Center, in appreciation of his extensive professional and research experience in the fields of monitoring, analysis, and specialized studies.

The Center’s Board of Trustees held its first meeting at the headquarters of the Akhbar Al-Youm Foundation yesterday, headed by Dr. Ali El-Din Hilal, and with the membership of an elite group of public, academic and media figures, including: Counselor Taher Al-Kholy, Undersecretary of the Legislative Committee in the House of Representatives, Dr. Heba Shaheen, Dean of the Faculty of Media at Ain Shams University, Dr. Nashwa Akl, a member of the House of Representatives, Representative Adel Zidan, a member of the Senate, journalist Abdullah Hassan, former Chairman of the Board of Directors and Editorial Board of the Middle East News Agency, and Representative Ahmed Sabour, a member of the Center. Dr. Ali El-Din Hilal, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, emphasized in his opening speech that the Center pays special attention to the concerns of the Egyptian state, especially President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s directives regarding social and economic issues directly related to the lives of citizens, with strict adherence to scientific methodologies in monitoring and analyzing societal phenomena and variables.
For his part, journalist Islam Afifi, Chairman of the Board of Directors, explained that the inauguration of the center comes within a comprehensive institutional development plan witnessed by Akhbar Al-Youm Foundation, aiming to strengthen the research and analytical role, provide in-depth scientific treatments of societal issues, and study phenomena that have an impact on national security, most notably the terrorist phenomenon, while formulating practical recommendations supportive of decision-makers in various files, noting that the decision to establish the center is in implementation of the assignment of Engineer Abdel Sadiq Al-Shorbaji to support research, scientific and academic work in journalistic institutions. The selection of journalist Ahmed Al-Khatib as director of the “Akhbar Al-Youm” Center for Research and Strategic Studies came in recognition of his professional and research experience and as one of the most prominent researchers specializing in issues of combating terrorism and extremism and studies of political Islam.
Al-Khatib held a number of prominent journalistic and professional positions, including editor-in-chief of “Al-Watan” newspaper, and head of the culture and research sector at the United Media Services Company, in addition to his work as deputy editor-in-chief of “Al-Masry Al-Youm” newspaper, before joining the writers of Akhbar Al-Youm, to continue his professional career within a framework that enhances the intellectual and research role of the institution.
