The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, represented by the Central Pest Control Administration, intensified field visits to areas susceptible to termite infestation in all governorates of the Republic, while providing urgent support to families unable to treat and control, in implementation of the directives of Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
Dr. Ahmed Rizk, head of the Central Department for Pest Control, said that specialized committees have been formed to visit infection hotspots, especially in rural areas and mud-brick units, and to provide the necessary pesticides free of charge to those in need, noting that control work is carried out under the direct supervision of the engineers of the agricultural departments in the directorates.
Agriculture launches intensive campaigns to combat termites
The head of the Central Department for Pest Control revealed that during this year, about 3,018 housing units were treated in various governorates, and continuous follow-up committees were sent to Luxor and Aswan governorates, with the participation of localities and civil society, to conduct a comprehensive inventory of the units eligible for treatment to ensure that support reaches those who deserve it.
In a related context, the Ministry of Agriculture stressed that the recent reports about the demolition of houses due to termite activity are incorrect, explaining that the observed cases of cracking are due to the buildings’ aging and structural deterioration, and not due to insect infestation.
The Ministry explained that termites are usually active around mud buildings in search of cellulose, stressing that the infestations do not pose a serious danger if reported immediately, as the Ministry has a sufficient stock of effective pesticides to control any appearance of the insect as soon as it is discovered.
