The Technical Inspection Department of the Jewelry Stamping and Scales Authority, headed by Brigadier General Tamer El-Hanawi, and in coordination with the Supply Investigations Department at the Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade, launched an expanded monitoring campaign targeting a number of places where jewelry is traded and manufactured.
2 kilos of counterfeit gold jewelry and 4 tons of bullion and silver jewelry that did not conform to specifications were seized
This comes in light of the implementation of the directives of Dr. Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, to intensify oversight of the market for precious metals and gemstones, and to tighten procedures against attempts at fraud and manipulation. The Royal Stamping and Weights Authority continued its intensive oversight efforts, under the supervision of Dr. Hamdi El Hamahmy, Head of the Authority.
The campaign resulted in the seizure of 2 kilograms of counterfeit gold jewelry, and about 4 tons of non-compliant silver bullion and jewelry, in addition to the seizure of 6 tools used to imitate the seals of the Jewelry Stamping Department and scales.
Dr. Hamdi Al-Hamahmy confirmed that the seizures represent a serious violation of the laws regulating the trading of precious metals, most notably the Precious Metals and Gemstones Control Law No. (68) of 1976 and its amendments, and the Suppression of Fraud and Deception Law No. (48) of 1941 and its amendments, because they represent an explicit assault on consumer rights and harm to the national economy, by presenting artifacts as imported or manufactured abroad without paying the fees due to the state.
The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade stresses the continuation of sudden monitoring campaigns in all governorates, not tolerating any attempts at fraud or manipulation, and taking deterrent legal measures against violators, in order to preserve the rights of citizens and ensure the integrity and stability of the precious metals market.
