The 35th edition of the African Cup of Nations begins today, Sunday – Nations of Africa 2025- It is scheduled to be held in Morocco, during the period from December 21 to January 18.
Over the course of 70 years, the past 34 editions witnessed a number of records, both at the level of participating teams and players, which witnessed a strong presence of Egyptian football, as Cairo 24 monitors the most prominent of them in the following lines.
The most prominent records of the African Nations Championship
- Four players top the list of the most appearing in African nations throughout history: Ahmed Hassan, the national team star, Cameroonian Song, Ghanaian Andre Ayew, and Tunisian Youssef El-Masaki, with 8 appearances for each player.
- Song and Ayew are the duo who have played the most in Africa Cup of Nations finals, with 36 appearances each.
- The Egyptian national team has played the most matches in the African Cup of Nations, with 111 matches.
- Essam El-Hadary and Ahmed Hassan, the stars of the Egyptian national team, are the most successful in the Nations Cup, with 4 titles each.
- Congolese Pierre Ndiaye Mulamba is the player who scored the most goals in one edition, with 9 goals, in the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations.
- Ivorian Laurent Boko scored the most in a single match in the Cup of Nations, with 5 goals, against Ethiopia in the 1970 edition.
- The match between Egypt and Nigeria in the 1963 African Nations was the highest-scoring match in a single match in the tournament, with a total of 9 goals.
- Ayman Mansour, the former Zamalek star, scored the fastest goal in the history of the African Cup of Nations, as he scored against Gabon just 23 seconds after the start of the match.
- Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o is the all-time top scorer in the African Cup of Nations, with 18 goals.
- Hassan El Chadly, the former Egyptian national team star, is the one who has scored the most hat-tricks in the African Cup of Nations, as he scored it twice in the 1963 edition and the second in 1970, and ironically, both of them were against Nigeria.
The opening date of the African Nations 2025 in Morocco
Moulay Abdullah Stadium in Rabat will host the match between Morocco and the Comoros at ten in the evening today, in the opening match of the African Cup of Nations.
