Tecno, a subsidiary of the Transsion Group, revealed during the MWC events an ultra-thin concept phone based on a modular magnetic design, in a move aimed at breaking the fixed hardware model prevailing in current smartphones.
The idea of the device is based on the simple principle that traditional phones restrict the user to one configuration that is not scalable, which forces the entire device to be replaced to obtain new features. Conversely, this concept allows modules to be added or swapped as needed in just minutes.
The model comes with a thickness of 4.9 mm, with a design with a matte glass back and a rectangular magnetic array for attaching accessories. Power transmission relies on Pogo-Pin connectors, while data is transmitted via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and millimeter wave technology.
Users can install multiple modules such as additional attachable batteries, external camera lenses, and dedicated gaming controllers.
The project is still in its experimental phase, but if it is commercially launched, Transsion may open its standards to other companies, paving the way for building an integrated standard system that supports the development of various accessories from multiple parties.
