Samsung Electronics said on Wednesday that it will launch in April a foldable smartphone called the Galaxy Fold, which comes with a set of Facebook and Google applications. The new phone comes in a different form than previous phones, as it offers a qualitative leap for the future by combining traditional phones and tablets in one device, as the Samsung Galaxy Fold phone is easily transformed from its regular form with a 4.3-inch screen to a larger screen device with a 7.3-inch screen.

Samsung officials said that the Galaxy Fold phone will be priced at $1,980 when it goes on sale on April 26. The new phone’s display screen will be 4.6 inches when folded and 7.3 inches when extended.

Samsung said that it is working with Facebook and Microsoft to find special versions of their famous applications that fit the display screen of its new phone.

The new device may help Samsung, the world’s largest mobile phone maker, compete with rivals such as Apple and China’s Huawei Technologies Co, both of which sell luxury smartphones.

Samsung said it has developed new manufacturing processes for the phone’s hinge and flexible display to allow it to be opened and closed hundreds of thousands of times.

It is expected that the new phone will come at a price of $1,980, starting next April 26, that is, approximately two months from now.
