Currently, tapping on Smart Replies in Google Messages sends the suggestion directly, but the latest beta reveals a new feature called “Tap to Edit” that will significantly improve the user experience.
According to APK Insight analysis, which is based on decoding the latest version of the app on the Play Store, we can learn about potential future features before it is officially launched.
It should be noted that these features may never be released, and the interpretation may not be completely accurate, but we often show features that are closer to completion to show what they are expected to look like at launch.
In beta 20260113_01_RC00, the current behavior is described as “Tap to Send,” where tapping Smart Reply sends the message directly.

As for the new option, it will allow “Tap Smart Replies to update your message draft,” that is, placing the proposed response in the writing field so that the user can modify it before sending. Thus, messages can be customized or expanded before sending, and it helps prevent sending by mistake.
However, this feature is not yet available, as the current Settings > Suggestions menu is limited to enabling or disabling “Smart Reply” only.
