Zynga will shut down Facebook’s original web game FarmVille at the end of the year, the company announced.

It’s also not entirely unexpected news as Facebook said in July that it would no longer support Flash games as of December 31, the same date Adobe is killing off the Flash player entirely.

But it feels like the end of the era of flash games (sometimes useful and annoying) like FarmVille – especially when your Facebook friends who were tending to their crops start sending you notifications one by one.

It was a big win for Zynga when the game launched in 2009 and had over 10 million daily active users in less than two months of launch.

At the height of its popularity, about 30 million people played FarmVille daily, pushing Zynga to record revenues.

A mobile version followed, but subsequent games never captured the charm of the original.

FarmVille players will be able to continue making in-app purchases until November 17, after which their payment system will be closed.

You can still play the game until December 31, after which it will be closed permanently.

Zynga says a mobile version of FarmVille 3 will be available worldwide soon.
