
Details of the increase in tension between India and China regarding India’s claim that China is spying on it using some Chinese applications. Here are the details?
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has received numerous complaints from various sources, including several reports about the misuse of some mobile applications available on Android and iOS platforms to steal user data and stealthily transfer it in an unauthorized manner to servers with locations outside India. The Indian ministry said in a statement: “There has been a group of pleas for strict action against applications that are detrimental to India’s sovereignty as well as the privacy of our citizens.”
The New Delhi-based digital rights group Software Law and Freedom Center expressed concerns about the grounds on which the ban was issued.
“India unfortunately lacks a data protection law and a comprehensive cybersecurity policy. The ban has highlighted the need for transparency and accountability in the Commission’s actions as well as in executive decisions banning apps or websites.
Tensions between the world’s two most populous countries have escalated since early this year and escalated after more than 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a military clash in the Himalayas in June.
Since then, the “Boycott China” campaign – and its variants – has trended on Twitter in India, with a growing number of people posting videos showing the destruction of smartphones, televisions and other Chinese-made products.
In April, India also made a change in its foreign investment policy that requires Chinese investors – who have invested billions of dollars in Indian startups in recent years – to obtain New Delhi’s approval before they can write new checks to Indian companies.
The move significantly reduced the presence of Chinese investors in Indian startup deal flows in the months that followed.
Last month, Alibaba Group reportedly halted any new investments in Indian companies for at least six months.
The Indian Defense Ministry said on Monday that Indian soldiers stopped an attempt to claim more territory for Chinese forces late last week in violation of existing agreements between the two countries.
