Remembering passwords isn’t the easiest thing, and given the number of apps, platforms, and devices we use these days, we have many passwords to keep in mind when choosing them.
While we tend to set easy-to-remember passwords when setting up a new password or changing an old one, to make things easier for us – this is not a good approach and is not safe.
You can always write down your passwords or save them as a note on an app like Evernote on Android or Note on iPhone, but this too can come with its own set of problems for some individuals. However, let’s start with the basics that you should keep in mind when using it.
Basics of choosing a new password
1. Do not use the same password on multiple platforms.
If anyone can hack one of your accounts, they will try to use the same password on other accounts as well.
2. Do not use names as passwords.
The names of your parents, siblings, or children in particular, and avoid using the brand name of your car as well, as these are easy words to know.
3. Never use credit card PINs
Never use debit cards as passwords, and don’t use phone numbers either.
4. Don’t use birthdays and anniversary dates as passwords.
5. Avoid using serial numbers
Such as passport number or ID card number as passwords.
6. Do not reuse an old password.
Most platforms do not accept a password that has just been used, but avoid using a password that you have changed in a few months. Also, lists of expired passwords can be obtained from some dark web sites or from database leaks by hackers.
7. Do not save your passwords on the Internet in any way.
Do not save passwords online, not even as a draft on an email. You should write it manually or save it on your device, but be careful.
8. Browsers such as Google Chrome with the option to save the password.
Although this feature is very useful, it is best to avoid it, as this makes all your saved passwords vulnerable if you accidentally access a malicious website.
9. Use two-step authentication where available.
10. Try to change your passwords every few months
