Alaa Farouk, Minister, held a contract Agriculture Land Reclamation, and Dr. Mahmoud Mumtaz, Head of the Competition Protection and Monopolistic Practices Authority, held an expanded meeting with members of the Board of Directors of the General Union of Poultry Producers, to discuss the challenges facing the sector and ways to stabilize local markets, especially with the approaching month of Ramadan.

The Minister of Agriculture confirmed during the meeting, which was attended by Engineer Mustafa Al-Sayyad, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Mahmoud Al-Anani, Chairman of the Federation’s Board of Directors, and a number of Council members, that the state attaches the utmost importance to the poultry sector as it is one of the most important pillars of Egyptian food security, indicating that the goal of the meeting is to protect freedom of competition and ensure the stability of the poultry and table egg market, in a way that achieves a balance between the producer’s interest for continued production, and the consumer’s right to obtain these goods with the best quality and at fair prices.

Protecting competition: We will not tolerate any monopolistic practices or agreements that may affect prices

For his part, the head of the Competition Protection and Prevention of Monopolistic Practices Authority stressed that the Competition Protection Authority carefully monitors all trading episodes in this vital sector, stressing that the Authority will not tolerate any monopolistic practices or horizontal or vertical agreements that may affect the final price for the consumer, and pointed out that the law aims to protect free competition that is in the interest of the consumer and the national economy.

The meeting reviewed the state’s efforts to provide feed and production requirements to ensure the sustainability of work on farms. Ways to reduce the price gap between the farm and the final consumer through market control were also discussed, in addition to discussing providing facilities to producers to increase production capacities and cover the needs of the local market.
For their part, members of the Board of Directors of the General Union of Poultry Producers expressed their appreciation for the government’s efforts, stressing their commitment to working with the Ministry and the agency to ensure freedom of competition and to provide products at competitive prices determined individually by producers according to economics that express market mechanisms of supply and demand, while seeking to increase supply during the coming period to meet the needs of citizens as the holy month of Ramadan approaches.
