US Vice President J.D. Vance is preparing to assume the most important mission of his career Politicalwhich is to lead American efforts to end a war that he had expressed concern about waging from the beginning.
According to Axios, Vance has already made several contacts with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, met with US allies in the Gulf regarding the war, and also participated in indirect contacts with the Iranians, and is expected to be the chief American negotiator in any potential peace talks.
The war continues for several more weeks
Vance was deeply skeptical of Israel’s optimistic pre-war assessment of how it would develop, and currently expects the war to continue for several more weeks, according to American and Israeli sources.
Vance’s advisors believe that some parties in Israel are trying to undermine his standing, perhaps because they see him as not radical enough, while Israeli officials deny this.
According to Axios, President Donald Trump made Vance’s role official during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, when he asked the vice president to provide an update on Iran, noting that he is working with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on the negotiations.
White House officials say Vance’s standing within the administration and his known opposition to long wars abroad make him a more palatable party to the Iranians than Boitkoff and Kushner, who oversaw two previous rounds of failed talks.
Partly for these reasons, Witkoff recommended Vance as the lead negotiator.
Iranian officials told the mediators that they were still waiting for the green light from the senior leadership. If such negotiations are held, Vance may sit at the negotiating table opposite Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
Another US administration official told Axios that there is an Israeli operation against J.D. Vance, referring to the narrative that the Iranians see Vance as someone inclined to make a deal and end the war.
White House officials began to suspect that some Israeli government officials were trying to tarnish Vance’s image after a difficult phone call Monday between Netanyahu and Vance.
During the call, Vance indicated that several of Netanyahu’s predictions regarding the war were overly optimistic, especially regarding the possibility of a popular uprising to topple the Iranian regime, according to an Israeli and an American source.
