The Ministry of Transport published aerial photography footage showing the significant progress in implementing the work of the first phase of the project Alexandria MetroIt is one of the most important national projects that will create a qualitative shift in the mass transportation system within the coastal capital.

Alexandria Metro Project

According to transportation, the Alexandria Metro project extends over a length of 21.7 kilometers from Abu Qir railway station to Misr Station, with 6.5 km of surface track from Misr Station until before Al-Dhahriya Station, then 15.2 km of overhead track until Abu Qir Station, and includes 20 stations, 6 surface – 14 overhead.

Transport explained in a statement that work on the Alexandria Metro project continues to progress on several fronts in parallel, including the installation of beams for the track bridges in the sectors extending from Toson Station to Gabriel Station, the implementation of piles, columns and slabs for the upper track, and the completion of foundation work of piles, bases and columns for the various stations.

The Ministry indicated the progress of leveling and fencing work in the project’s two workshops in Abu Qir and Kafr Abdo, with the start of building and infrastructure work in the Kafr Abdo workshop.

A qualitative shift in mass transportation in Alexandria

The Ministry of Transport confirmed that the Alexandria Metro represents a major transformation in the sustainable green transportation system in Alexandria, as it provides modern solutions that keep pace with urban expansion and serve millions of passengers, in addition to its direct role in supporting economic and social development in the governorate.

The project aims to eliminate illegal crossings and crossings to achieve the highest levels of safe operation, accommodate the huge increase in the volume of daily trips, contribute to reducing traffic congestion within Alexandria, and rely on clean electrical energy, which contributes to reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Double the time and a shift in operational capacity

Upon completion of the first phase, the metro will achieve significant development in performance indicators.

  • Raising the maximum passenger capacity from 2,850 passengers/hour/way to 60,000 passengers/hour/way.
  • Reducing flight time from 50 minutes to only 25 minutes.
  • Operating speed increased from 25 km/h to 100 km/h.
  • Reducing dripping time from 10 minutes to 2.5 minutes.
