Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that the United States and Iran are showing flexibility regarding the nuclear agreement, as Washington appears ready to tolerate some uranium enrichment operations.
The Iranian nuclear agreement
Fidan added to the Financial Times that it is positive that the Americans appear willing to tolerate Iranian enrichment within clearly defined limits, saying: The Iranians now realize that they need to reach an agreement with the Americans… The Americans realize that the Iranians have certain limits… and it is useless to try to force them.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan believed that Tehran sincerely wanted to reach a real agreement and would accept restrictions on enrichment levels and a strict inspection regime, as it did in the 2015 agreement with the United States and others.
But the Turkish Foreign Minister warned that expanding the scope of the Iran-US talks to include ballistic missiles would only lead to another war.
US and Iranian diplomats held meetings in the Sultanate of Oman last week in an attempt to revive diplomacy, after President Donald Trump deployed a naval fleet to the region, raising fears of new military action.
Washington has so far asked Iran to give up its stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% fissile purity, a small step away from the 90% considered suitable for weapons use.
While Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Iran will continue to demand the lifting of financial sanctions and insist on its nuclear rights, including enrichment.
