The change came in the movie Couture, directed by Alice Winocour and starring Angelina Jolie. When the film was shown in French cinemas in February 2026, Maddox’s name appeared in the final sequences without mentioning his father’s surname.
His name was also registered in the same way during the previous screening of the work at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2025, confirming that the move was not spontaneous, but rather a clear career choice.
Interestingly, Maddox had previously appeared as “Maddox Jolie-Pitt” during his work in the film Maria, which was shown in 2024 on Netflix. This makes the current transformation an indication of a deliberate change in the way one presents one’s identity within the film industry.
The 24-year-old works behind the camera as an assistant director, as part of his increasing involvement in filmmaking alongside his mother.
Maddox is not the first to take a similar step. In 2023, Zahra used the name Zahra Marley Jolie while joining the Alpha Kappa Alpha fraternity at Spelman College. Shiloh also appeared as Shiloh Jolie in the Broadway play The Outsiders in 2024, which her mother co-produced.
