
On the sidelines of his participation in the fifth edition of the International Mining Conference in Riyadh, Engineer Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, held two meetings with Professor John O’Neill, Director of the Government and Industrial Partnerships Sector at Curtin University in Australia, and Professor Morgan Bazilian, Director of the Bain Institute for Public Policy at Colorado Mines University, during which he discussed cooperation with the two largest universities in the world in mining sciences to develop Egyptian human resources.
The meeting with the Curtin University delegation aimed to put the final touches on the training program for executive leaders and engineers at the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority, with a focus on global sustainability standards and mining financing systems. It was also agreed to set a date for the university delegation to visit Egypt to inspect mining sites, discuss prospects for cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education, and discuss preparing a memorandum of understanding to support scientific research in converting raw materials into industrial products.
In his meeting with the director of the Payne Institute at the University of Colorado, which is ranked first in the world in mining sciences, opportunities for establishing a regional center of excellence or a branch of the university in Egypt to serve the African continent and the Middle East were discussed. And cooperation in developing a national strategy for vital and rare minerals to support renewable energy goals, and the use of artificial intelligence solutions and satellite data to monitor mining operations, as well as ways to cooperate with the university to train Egyptian cadres.
The Minister stressed that these partnerships with major international universities and academic institutions contribute to developing the capabilities of Egyptian cadres in the mining sector and refining their skills in accordance with the latest international standards.
