Health authorities in the United Kingdom recorded the death of an octogenarian man suspected of being infected with the disease CholeraThis is the first incident of its kind in nearly 125 years, according to The Sun.

The man died inside George Elliot Hospital in Nuneaton, after a rapid deterioration in his health condition. He felt unwell about a week ago at his home, then he was transferred to the hospital following a sharp decline in his vital functions.

The first cholera death in Britain in 125 years

The British Health Security Agency confirmed that tests showed that he was infected with a strain known as “non-toxigenic Vibrio cholera,” according to the Daily Mail. The doctors informed his family that his condition was very critical, and he remained under medical care until he passed away in the presence of his family members.

Local reports indicated that the deceased had not traveled outside the country recently, which raised questions about the source of the infection, especially since he was living a stable life with his family.

What is cholera?

Cholera is an intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, and is often transmitted through ingestion of contaminated water or food. The incubation period ranges from one to five days, and the most prominent symptoms are severe watery diarrhea and vomiting, which leads to severe dehydration that may be life-threatening if not treated quickly.

The disease caused thousands of deaths during the Victorian era between 1831 and 1865, before it almost disappeared in Britain thanks to improved sewerage networks and the provision of clean drinking water. The last recorded death from cholera in the country dates back to 1901.

Cholera prevention depends on strict adherence to personal hygiene rules, especially washing hands well with soap and water, and using clean or boiled water for drinking and preparing food, as the disease is not transmitted through coughing or sneezing.

Replacing lost fluids and salts through oral rehydration solutions is the primary treatment, which contributes to preventing serious complications resulting from rapid fluid loss.
