Informed sources reported to the American website Axios that Iran has demanded changes to the location and form of the upcoming negotiations with the United States, scheduled to be held next Friday.
Talks between Washington and Tehran
The sources told Axios that Tehran backed away from the understandings reached during the past few days, after sending invitations to several countries to participate in the talks, as it demanded that they be moved from Istanbul to the Sultanate of Oman, and that they be held in a bilateral format with the United States only, instead of the presence of Arab and Islamic countries as observers.
An informed source attributed this position to Iran’s desire to limit negotiations to the nuclear file, and to avoid discussing other issues such as the ballistic missile program and the role of its allied groups in the region, which are issues that are a priority for regional countries.
In the latest developments, Axios quoted an Arab source as saying that the talks are expected to be held in the Sultanate of Oman on Friday, after the Trump administration approves the Iranian request, indicating the continuation of consultations regarding the participation of other regional parties in the meetings.
For her part, White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said that talks with Iran are still ongoing, stressing that President Trump is committed to giving diplomacy a priority, but he keeps all options on the table.
On the other hand, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman told the official media that Türkiye and the Sultanate of Oman are among the sites proposed to host the talks, stressing that the timing and location of the meetings should not be used as an excuse for media games.
