Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadiq, President of Cairo University, reviewed a report from Dr. Mohamed Abdel Moati Samra, Dean of the National Cancer Institute, about the therapeutic and diagnostic services that were provided in 2025 to patients visiting the Institute and its affiliated hospitals, in addition to the achievements that were achieved at all levels during the same year.
Abdel Sadiq stressed that the National Oncology Institute is one of the most prominent and leading medical edifices in Egypt and the region, and provides great services to cancer patients, and is constantly keen to improve the level of health care provided. He pointed out that the Cairo University administration pays great attention to modernizing the infrastructure and medical equipment at the institute and its affiliated hospitals, out of its belief in the importance of keeping pace with scientific and technological development in the field of oncology treatment, within the framework of its humanitarian mission and its commitment to its national and societal role.
He pointed out that the Institute will continue to fulfill its medical and scientific mission, and provide specialized medical services to cancer patients from various governorates of the Republic in accordance with the latest international standards and protocols followed in the treatment of oncology, through an integrated system for treatment, diagnosis and scientific research, supported by highly qualified medical and nursing staff, pointing to the Institute’s pioneering role in preparing medical staff and supporting scientific research in the field of oncology, and providing various preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic and supportive services to patients.
He pointed to the total current capacity of the institute’s hospitals (Northern, Southern, and Breast in the First Settlement), which includes 496 beds, including 49 intensive care beds, 18 emergency beds, and 160 chemotherapy beds, in addition to 16 surgical operating rooms, 56 outpatient clinics, 4 CT scan machines, two MRI machines, 11 sonar machines, two echo machines, and two gamma camera machines. A positron atomic scanning device (PET-CT), in addition to five radiotherapy devices, two linear therapists, and two brachytherapy devices, in addition to providing psychological and social support to the patient through patient navigation teams, specialized awareness teams, providing nutritional consultations, palliative therapy and pain treatment, and providing hosting and transportation.
The report monitored that all of the institute’s hospitals received about 482,758 patients, including 29,453 new patients, representing about a quarter of the number of new cancer patients in Egypt annually, as the institute receives an average of 1,522 patients daily in outpatient clinics.
The total number of operations performed at the institute reached 7,680 major and minor operations and surgical endoscopy, in addition to giving about 100,000 chemotherapy sessions, 62,000 radiotherapy sessions, 54,000 diagnostic x-rays, and performing 1,601,137 laboratory analyses, in addition to examining 1,600 cases through the early tumor detection unit, and the pain treatment clinic receiving 34,513 patients, noting that the institute treats all patients in all specialties and ages. (11% of them are children), at all stages of the disease, whether their treatment began outside the institute or their treatment has not yet begun, and 96% of them are treated free of charge without bearing any cost to the patient (at the expense of the general budget – the state’s expense – health insurance – or donations).
The report showed that about 13,593 patients were treated in 2025 within the various presidential initiatives, as about 5,520 patients were received and treated within the initiative for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, 7,343 patients were received within the initiative to eliminate surgical waiting lists, and 730 patients were received within the initiative for early detection and treatment of lung, prostate, colon, and cervical cancers, in addition to treating about 9,177 patients in inpatient departments, and 1,525 patients in the intensive care departments of the institute’s hospitals.
He noted that the Breast Hospital in the cluster received 177,741 patients, including 6,342 new patients, in addition to performing 1,423 surgical operations, providing 36,101 chemotherapy sessions, 16,909 radiotherapy sessions, 6,481 mammograms, 3,518 CT scans, and 58,131 laboratory analyses, in addition to receiving 5,252 patients at the therapeutic nutrition clinic inside the hospital, and providing… 4855 awareness and psychological support sessions, and 2412 physical therapy sessions.
At the level of international accreditation, the report indicated that the Southern Hospital obtained initial accreditation from the General Authority for Health Accreditation and Regulatory (GAHAR), and was internationally accredited by the International Society for Quality in Healthcare (ESCWA), and obtained international accreditation for all of the institute’s clinical pathology laboratories (genetics – immunology – hematology – marrow transplantation) from the National Accreditation Council (EGAC), and that the Breast Hospital won the gold award for the best project to improve patient experience and develop guidance and education programs for breast cancer patients.
Preparations are currently underway for the Breast Hospital in the community to obtain accreditation from the General Authority for Health Accreditation and Regulatory (GAHAR), in addition to the accreditation of the Clinical Research Center and the Institute’s Medical Research Ethics Review Committee from the Supreme Council for Review of Clinical Medical Research Ethics affiliated with the Council of Ministers, and to apply for institutional and programmatic accreditation from the National Authority for Quality Assurance of Education and Accreditation.
The report monitored that the institute’s hospitals achieved a 97.95% completion rate in responding to the Cabinet’s electronic complaints system in 2025, exceeding the targeted completion rate of 95.23%.
At the level of developing the institute’s hospitals, the report indicated the opening and operation of new expansions to the hospital’s outpatient clinic complex, which include new clinics for surgery and pain treatment, and a physical therapy unit in March 2025, and the start of operation of the hospital’s new CT scan machine in May 2025, in addition to the installation and operation of two gamma camera devices in the nuclear medicine unit (Breast Hospital – Foum Al Khaleej), and a new and advanced ultrasound device in the breast tumor screening unit at the Southern Hospital.
The new Clinical Research Center (Prof. Dr. Rabab Jaafar) was opened after the completion of its expansions and renovations. It is staffed by a qualified team certified in Good Clinical Practices (GCP), which has participated in more than 57 multi-center clinical trials around the world. Preparations are also currently underway to implement a project to develop the Experimental Research and Training Center in the Sheikh Zayed Building.
The report explained the ongoing development processes, which include completing a project to restart and develop the bone marrow transplant unit and the isolation unit for immunocompromised leukemia patients at the Southern Hospital, which will benefit about 400 new marrow and blood disease transplant cases annually at least.
The project to repair and renovate the institute’s outpatient clinics is nearing completion, to open it soon, and work is underway to completely renovate the Northern Hospital without evacuating it of patients, which is scheduled to be received within a year.
A project to rehabilitate and renovate the middle building of the Institute (laboratories and radiology building) was started at the beginning of 2026, and is scheduled to be completed within 3 years. Preparations are being made to implement a new project to develop the emergency unit at the Institute’s main headquarters during the year 2026. Work is underway to complete the digital transformation system for the Institute’s hospitals and expand the use of artificial intelligence applications in the field of hospitals.
Construction and equipment of the new Oncology Institute Hospital in Sheikh Zayed (500500)
The report indicated the near completion of the construction and equipment of the new Oncology Institute Hospital in Sheikh Zayed (500500), which is being built on an area of 225,000 square meters with a capacity of 360 beds, including 100 beds for intensive care, in addition to many operating rooms, various specialized clinics, bone marrow transplant units and other services such as laboratories and diagnostic and therapeutic radiology equipment, which will lead to a tripling of the capacity of the Institute’s hospitals compared to a year ago. 2022, significantly improving the services provided, and reducing waiting lists at the institute.
The report monitored the Institute’s organization of many events and medical convoys, such as the comprehensive medical convoy in all specialties at the Church of the Archangel Michael – Ancient Egypt (September 2025), and the awareness-raising medical convoy in the Asmarat neighborhood (October 2025), in addition to organizing many awareness campaigns, including an awareness day for oral and dental health care during chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the Breast Hospital (March 2025), and the celebration of World Hematology Day (May). 2025), and the celebration of World Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Day (September 2025).
The Institute organized the “Pink October” celebration and honoring women who have recovered from breast cancer (October 2025), and the awareness day for early detection of breast cancer in cooperation with the Graduate School of Education at Cairo University, in addition to organizing joint awareness sessions in cooperation between the Technical Institute of Nursing and the “Decent Life” Foundation, and a delegation of wives of military attachés visited the Breast Hospital in the community, and published awareness videos through the Institute’s pages on various social networking sites.
The report explained that the Institute had signed many international cooperation agreements, including the signing of an agreement to accredit the National Cancer Institute at Cairo University as a focal center cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency, to support the Institute and enhance its capabilities in the fields of medical physics, nuclear medicine, imaging, and radiotherapy. The Institute also received many international visits, such as the visit of the President of the European Society of Oncology Pharmacy, the visit of the delegation of the Federation of German Industries, the visit of the delegation of the Libyan National Cancer Control Authority, and the visit of the Secretary-General of the Emirates Red Crescent.
The report indicated that the institute’s annual international conference was organized last year (BGO 2025) in the presence of more than 3,000 Egyptian and foreign participants. On the sidelines of the conference, 19 workshops were held in the fields of laboratories, radiology, surgery, etc. The conference was accredited by the American Association for Continuing Medical Education (AACME) for the fifth year in a row, and for the first time the conference was accredited by the Egyptian Health Council as an accredited source for continuing medical education.
The report also indicated that the institute currently has 8 master’s degrees and 12 doctoral degrees, and the number of graduate students enrolled is 147 in master’s degrees and 196 in doctoral degrees.
Six new professional diplomas have been approved at the Institute by the Supreme Council of Universities, and 9 other professional diplomas are currently being prepared for accreditation in various oncology specialties. 753 documented research have been published on the international scientific publishing website (PubMed), and the Institute’s journal has maintained a high impact factor of 2.1 in 2025, according to the global Clarivate Analytics Foundation.
