Two sources revealed that any meeting between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not take place, unless Israel makes a clear and final pledge to stop any talk about displacing Palestinians.

This came according to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, citing Egyptian officials, who considered that the displacement represents the liquidation of the Palestinian cause and constitutes a direct threat to Egyptian national security.

Displacement of Palestinians

The two officials denied the receipt of any communications from Washington to Cairo regarding what was reported by the Axios website about a possible meeting between Sisi and Netanyahu at the Mar-a-Lago resort this month, noting that officials in Cairo were informed of the matter through the media only, and that there has been no Egyptian-American communication about it so far.

One source explained the difference between Netanyahu’s invitation to attend the peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, in which US President Donald Trump and other country leaders participated, and which witnessed the signing of an agreement to end the war in Gaza, and holding a direct bilateral meeting with Sisi.

He explained that Netanyahu’s attendance at that summit would have meant an official acknowledgment by Israel of the agreement, which includes preventing the issue of the displacement of Palestinians from being raised, while the bilateral meeting requires a clear Israeli commitment before it is held.

The two officials indicated that Egypt respects its official relations with all countries, including Israel, stressing that presidential meetings are not automatic, but are subject to the discretion of the Egyptian state and its agencies in accordance with what serves national security and the Egyptian national interest, and in proportion to the Egyptian positions regarding the files presented on the scene.

The American website Axios published a few days ago that Washington is seeking to hold a meeting between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
