Both Mali and Burkina Faso announced a ban on American citizens entering their territories, in response to US President Donald Trump’s decision to prevent citizens of both countries from entering the United States, according to The Guardian.

Reciprocity… Burkina Faso and Mali announce an entry ban for American citizens in response to Trump’s decision

The announcements, made on Tuesday in separate statements by the foreign ministries of the two West African countries, represented the latest development in the tense relationship between the West African military governments and the United States.

On December 16, Trump expanded previous travel restrictions to include 20 additional countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, which are countries governed by military juntas and formed a separate bloc from the regional organization, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Mali said in a statement that, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, the national and international government notifies that, as of now, the Republic of Mali will apply the same conditions and requirements imposed on Malian citizens to American nationals.

In another statement signed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, similar reasons were given for imposing a ban on the entry of American citizens into Burkina Faso.
