Hazem El Menoufi, member, confirmed Foodstuff Division, Maintaining market stability and the sustainability of local production represent a real challenge in light of global economic changes, stressing that maintaining the summit is more difficult than reaching it, and it is an equation that applies to all productive sectors and not a specific sector.
Al-Menoufi explained, in a statement, that international experiences have proven that the absence of proactive policies supporting the national industry leads to a decline in production, the closure of factories, and the loss of thousands of job opportunities, as a result of high operating costs and unfair competition from some low-priced imports, which reflects negatively on farmers, manufacturers, and consumers alike.
Balanced policies that ensure the protection of the local product
He pointed out that Egypt has promising opportunities to enhance local production in various food and strategic commodities, supported by agricultural and industrial expansion and growing investments. However, maximizing these opportunities requires balanced policies that guarantee the protection of the local product, support supply chains, and at the same time maintain price stability and not burden the consumer with additional burdens.
He stressed the importance of developing a clear road map that regulates the relationship between import and local production, and prevents harmful practices in the market, stressing that protecting the national industry does not conflict with competition, but rather aims to achieve fair and sustainable competition that is in the interest of the national economy.
Al-Menoufi concluded his statement by emphasizing that supporting local production in various sectors is a fundamental pillar for achieving food and economic security, and requires continuous coordination between government agencies, the private sector, and civil society organizations, ensuring stable markets and safe products available at fair prices.
