South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said that North and South Korea are in a very dangerous situation that could lead to an accidental clash at any moment, stressing the importance of Seoul engaging in dialogue with Pyongyang.

Military measures that have not taken place since the war between them… escalating tensions between North and South Korea

He explained that North Korea refuses to respond to Seoul’s attempts to establish contact, and is establishing barbed wire along the military border, which has not happened since the end of the Korean War of 1950-1953, according to what was reported by Yonhap News Agency.

The South Korean President added that relations between the two Koreas have become very hostile and confrontational, and in the absence of the slightest level of trust, North Korea is showing very extreme behavior.

Lee was speaking to reporters on a flight from South Africa, where he participated in the G20 summit, to Türkiye on the last stop of his visit.

On November 17, South Korea submitted a proposal to hold military talks with North Korea to discuss setting clear boundaries on the military border line to prevent armed clashes that could lead to a broader conflict, but Pyongyang did not respond to the proposal or interact with it.

More than ten cases of border breaches by North Korean soldiers were recorded this year, prompting some South Korean forces to fire warning shots in accordance with an approved protocol.

Lee stressed that achieving peace with North Korea would be a long-term effort, but noted that when a stable peace regime is established, it would be better for South Korea and the United States to stop joint military exercises.

Pyongyang has condemned these exercises conducted by the United States and South Korea, describing them as a rehearsal for a possible nuclear war against it, while about 28,500 American soldiers and military equipment are deployed in South Korea.
