Meat prices rise due to demand from users of protein fat injections
According to Oisin Hanrahan, head of food supply platform Keychain, global food insecurity and rising energy costs are additional factors adding to the pressure on prices.
Hanrahan added that people taking GLP-1 drugs, including Wegovy and Mounjaro, need nutrient-dense protein to compensate for their reduced daily food intake, which increases demand for meat.
Increased demand automatically leads to increased prices, Hanrahan said. It wouldn’t surprise me if we saw a 10-20% increase on some types of meat during the year.
The increases were not limited to meat only, but also affected chocolate, coffee, butter and fruits due to crop problems, bad weather conditions and customs tariffs, Hanrahan noted.
Hanrahan called on consumers to be flexible when shopping, and to be open to purchasing different types of meat and food products instead of adhering to specific menus, stressing:
“We cannot wait to see food prices decline on their own, but must adapt to the changing market.”
