Western and Arab countries, including Egypt, issued a joint statement regarding the situation in… LibyaHe stressed support for Libyan efforts to achieve stability and unity and integrate institutions between East and West.

The text of the joint statement by the governments of Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States stated that they renew their commitment to supporting the Libyan people’s quest for unity, stability, and prosperity, and their aspirations to achieve lasting peace.

The statement continued: We welcome the Security Council’s decision to extend the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the road plan drawn up by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Hannah Tetteh, and we urge all Libyan parties to use this plan and the facilitation provided by the mission to advance a Libyan-led political process towards unified governance and holding elections.

Supporting the strengthening of military and economic coordination between the West and the East in Libya

The countries affirmed their commitment to supporting the strengthening of military and economic coordination between the Libyan parties in the West and the East. They also welcomed Libyan efforts aimed at integrating the security forces, calling on Libyan leaders to take additional steps to expand military coordination between the East and the West, institutionalize it and unify it.

The statement continued: We also urge taking steps to strengthen Libyan economic institutions, especially the National Oil Corporation, the Central Bank of Libya, and the Audit Bureau.

The statement praised the appointment of an official head of the National Oil Corporation according to a decision issued on September 29, and the unified development program agreement that was signed on November 18 by representatives of the Libyan House of Representatives and the Supreme Council of State.

He continued: These steps would contribute to putting Libya on a path of more sustainable economic policies and towards greater prosperity, as they pave the way for the implementation of the National Oil Corporation’s program to increase energy production and economic growth, enhance the stability of the Central Bank of Libya and Libya’s financial stability, and provide development projects throughout the country with an agreed upon supervisory framework.

He stressed that enhancing economic and security integration is essential to ensuring Libya’s sovereignty, security and prosperity in the long term, and will complement and strengthen the political process. A strong and prosperous Libya with unified economic, military and political institutions is in the interest of all parties.
