A multidisciplinary medical team at university hospitals succeeded Assiut In achieving an exceptional medical achievement, saving the life of a 26-year-old young woman and her fetus, after she suffered a severe brain hemorrhage while she was in the ninth month of pregnancy, in a medical incident that required rapid intervention and coordination between several departments.
This medical achievement came with the support and sponsorship of Professor Dr. Ahmed Al-Minshawy, President of the University, and Professor Dr. Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals.
Severe brain hemorrhage
The Women’s Health Hospital, headed by Professor Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim, had received a 26-year-old young woman, suffering from a severe disorder in the degree of consciousness and her entry into an almost complete coma. The necessary tests and CT scans were immediately performed, which showed the presence of severe bleeding in the brain tissue, which necessitated the formation of a joint medical team that included departments (Gynecology and Obstetrics, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics, Anesthesia, and Intensive Care).
In a scene that reflects the competence of the medical staff, the patient was transferred to the Neuropsychiatric and Neurosurgery Hospital, headed by Professor Dr. Tariq Rajeh.
A medical team from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, under the supervision of Muhammad Fathallah, Head of the Department, and including Dr. Muhammad Bahaa El-Din, a teacher and consultant in the department, Dr. Yousra Gamal Rateb, an assistant lecturer in the department, Dr. Suleiman Muhammad Al-Azhari, a resident physician in the department, and Professor Basma Mahmoud, nursing in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, performed an urgent cesarean section to extract the baby girl, who was born in good health and received immediate care from a medical team in the children’s department, which came under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jamal Askar, Head of the Department, and included Dr. Martina Tharwat, Assistant Lecturer, Dr. Marwa Hassan, Resident Physician in the Department, Dr. Ahmed Hossam, Resident Physician, and Professor Noura Abdel Karim, Nursing in the Pediatrics Department.
In conjunction with this, a medical team from the Department of Neurosurgery, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Muhammad Al-Sayed, Head of the Department, and including Dr. Abdullah Rajab Al-Khudari, a teacher and consultant in the department, Dr. Ibrahim Ahmed Youssef, an assistant lecturer in the department, Dr. Islam Mustafa, a resident physician in the department, and Professor Ahmed Muhammad, a nurse in the Department of Neurosurgery, performed a delicate surgical operation to expand the cerebral chamber to control cerebral infiltration, as it was found that there was bleeding resulting from an arteriovenous malformation. (AVM).
Following the surgery, the patient was transferred to intensive care under an “artificial coma” to maintain the stability of her vital signs, until coordination was made with a medical team in the Diagnostic Radiology Department of the main hospital, which came under the supervision of Professor Dr. Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the Main Hospital, and Professor Dr. Hassan Magali, Head of the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department, and included Professor Dr. Mustafa Hashem, Professor of Interventional Radiology, Dr. Mahmoud Refaat, and Dr. Mohamed Abdel Wahab, teachers in the department.
Within less than 24 hours, the medical team performed a diagnostic and therapeutic brain catheterization, during which the arterial malformation was closed using the Onyx embolization technique with complete success.
The medical team included a distinguished medical team from the Department of Anesthesiology, which came under the supervision of Professor Dr. Hala Saad, Head of the Department, and included Mustafa Hassanein, a teacher and consultant in the department, Dr. Omar Rabie Ali, an assistant lecturer in the department, Dr. Islam Abu Al-Yusr, an assistant lecturer in the department, Dr. Al-Farouq Ayman Farouk, a resident physician in the department, and Dr. Amir Muhammad Abdel Nabi, a resident physician in the department.
The patient made a full recovery and regained full consciousness, and she and her baby are now in good health.
This surgery reflects a distinguished model of cooperation between various medical specialties and the competence of the medical staff at Assiut University Hospitals in managing critical and complex cases.
