Within the framework of the Egyptian state’s continuing efforts to recover cultural property that exited Egypt illegally, and in implementation of the directives of the political leadership to give the recovery of Egyptian antiquities to the homeland a top priority, the Consulate General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in New York received a group of rare antiquities that exited Egypt illegally.

Recovering artifacts from America

This reflects the international cooperation and close coordination between the Consulate General in New York and the Antiquities Smuggling Unit of the New York Attorney General’s Office, in coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and highlights the extent of the fruitful cooperation between Egypt and the United States of America in the field of combating illicit trafficking in antiquities and returning Egyptian pieces that came out illegally. An official handover ceremony was organized that reflects the level of existing cooperation between the two countries.

Consul General Tamer Kamal El-Meligy, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in New York, stressed in his speech on this occasion that the recovery of these pieces is the result of fruitful and extended cooperation between the Egyptian government and the American authorities, led by the Office of the Attorney General in New York, which reflects a joint commitment to protecting the cultural heritage of humanity and combating illicit trafficking in cultural property.

Egypt expressed its sincere appreciation to the competent American authorities for the professional and legal efforts that were made, which ended with the decision to return the artifact to its original country, which reflects the spirit of shared responsibility between countries in confronting illicit trafficking in cultural property.
