Doctors in Bulgaria witnessed a rare case of a 52-year-old man who suffered almost complete loss of vision as a result of complications Syphilis Ocular, which is an advanced form of sexually transmitted syphilis infection, according to what the British newspaper Daily Mail reported.
A man suffered almost complete loss of vision
The medical team explained that the patient arrived at the University Hospital in the city of Pleven suffering from a skin rash and vision problems. After clinical examinations and laboratory tests, it was found that he had a syphilis infection, which later developed to reach the eyes and cause severe infections that seriously affected the retina and optic nerve.
Medical reports indicate that the man had almost lost the ability to distinguish light in one eye, while the vision in the other eye was extremely blurry. Eye examination revealed widespread inflammation, swelling of the retina, and dense floaters that obscured vision almost completely.
The patient began an intensive treatment journey that included intravenous antibiotics and eye drops containing anti-inflammatory and steroids. After weeks of follow-up and treatment, his condition witnessed a gradual improvement, as his eyes regained the ability to see to a large extent, and reached results that approached the normal rate after 14 weeks, with the exception of a slight sensitivity to light.
Syphilis
Ocular syphilis is a serious complication of untreated syphilis and can lead to permanent blindness if the patient does not receive timely medical treatment.
Doctors confirmed that this type of infection is one of the reasons contributing to the global rise in syphilis cases in recent years.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that syphilis infection rates in the United States have risen by more than 50% between 2020 and 2023, and cases of transmission of the infection from mother to fetus have recorded an alarming rise in recent years.
Syphilis is known in medical circles as the great imitator due to its similarity to many eye diseases, making early diagnosis essential to avoid serious complications.
This case highlights the importance of regular examination and medical follow-up when any unusual symptoms appear, and taking sexually transmitted diseases very seriously due to their ability to affect vital organs such as the eyes, nervous system, and heart.
