The Council of Muslim Elders, headed by His Eminence the Grand Imam A. D. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, said that human heritage represents the memory of peoples and the record of their cultural identity, and a bridge of communication between nations, pointing out that preserving human heritage is a protection of the memory of humanity and an investment in a peaceful future.
Council of Muslim Elders: Human heritage is the memory of peoples… and Islamic heritage is a civilizational witness to coexistence
The Council of Muslim Elders said, in a statement on the occasion of World Heritage Day, that protecting heritage is a shared human responsibility, in light of the threats it is exposed to due to conflicts, climate change, or attempts to obliterate and distort it, stressing that preserving it includes values and customs that enhance identity and belonging.
The Council explained that the Islamic heritage is considered one of the most prominent tributaries of human heritage, with the values of mercy, justice and mutual understanding it embodies, in accordance with the Almighty’s saying: “O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes.” That you may get to know each other. Throughout its history, it has presented a civilizational model based on science, respect for diversity, and positive interaction with cultures.
The statement indicated that preserving Islamic heritage would contribute to consolidating the values of moderation and openness, and confronting extremist and hate speeches, calling for its use in promoting dialogue and tolerance, and building bridges of understanding between peoples.
The Council of Muslim Elders renewed its call to the international community to strengthen joint efforts to protect human heritage and preserve its components, in a way that preserves the memory of humanity and enhances the process of coexistence and peace.
