One study revealed that there is an unexpected part of eggs that is rich in nutrients that improve the appearance of hair and skin, and this part is eggshells.
Benefits of eating eggshells for the skin
According to what was published by the American newspaper New York Post, the study was conducted on a number of people between the ages of 35 and 65 years, who took 450 mg of a hydrolyzed eggshell membrane product for three months. The eggshell membrane is the transparent layer that lines the shell.
The researchers noticed a noticeable improvement in the appearance of facial skin, as they noticed a decrease in wrinkles around the eyes within 4 weeks, and an improvement in skin tone and texture after eight weeks. The participants also noticed a noticeable increase in the density of their hair, a decrease in split ends, and an improvement in its growth.
According to the team, these benefits are likely due to the skin-boosting ingredients found in eggshell membranes, specifically essential ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, keratin and amino acids.
The body naturally produces hyaluronic acid, which helps moisturize the skin and improve its freshness and radiance.
Keratin, another protein that the body produces naturally, is an essential nutrient that makes up our skin, hair, and nails, and is found in foods like broccoli, carrots, salmon, and, of course, eggs. At the same time, amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and have many benefits, from improving skin health to weight loss.
As we age, the body produces less of these active ingredients to maintain youthful skin, leading to the appearance of more fine lines, wrinkles and discolouration, but the benefits of eggshell membranes are not limited to the skin and hair only.
A previous study conducted in 2009 showed that these nutritional supplements may improve joint pain and stiffness, providing relief to those suffering from arthritis.
