US President Donald Trump sent a letter of thanks and appreciation to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for his successful efforts in mediating between Hamas and Israel, reaching a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, and his appreciation for the Egyptian role and distinguished relations between the two countries.
The American President said, in the text of his message, “Dear President Sisi, I thank you for your leadership in successfully mediating a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. I acknowledge and appreciate your consistent role in managing many of the security and humanitarian challenges that have faced this region, and that your people have also faced, since October 7, 2023. This war has burdened the Egyptians, and not just their neighbors in Israel and Gaza.”
He added, “In the context of our personal friendship, and the United States’ commitment to peace and the well-being of the Egyptian people, I am ready to relaunch American mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia in order to responsibly reach a solution to the issue of ‘sharing the waters of the Nile River’ once and for all. My team and I understand the profound importance of the Nile River to Egypt and its people, and I would like to help you achieve an outcome that guarantees the water needs of Egypt, the Republic of Sudan, and Ethiopia in the long term.”
The American President continued, saying: “The United States affirms that no country in this region should unilaterally control the precious resources of the Nile River, and harm its neighbors in the process… I believe that through appropriate technical expertise, fair and transparent negotiations, and a strong role for the United States in monitoring and coordination between the parties, we can reach a permanent agreement that serves all the countries of the Nile Basin, and a successful approach will ensure the release of predictable quantities of water during periods of drought and long dry years for the benefit of Egypt and Sudan, while allowing Ethiopia to generate very large quantities of Electricity, some of which could be given, or sold, to Egypt and/or Sudan.”
Concluding his message, the American President said, “I thank you again for the friendship and partnership you have extended to me and the people of the United States. Resolving the tensions surrounding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is my top priority, as I work to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East and Africa. I strongly hope that this completely understandable dispute over the Renaissance Dam (the dam!) will not lead to a major military conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia. Thank you for your interest in this matter.”
