According to a Chinese leaker on the Weibo platform, OpenAI is preparing to launch the first hardware product in its history, and surprisingly, it will be smart earphones powered by the company’s artificial intelligence model.
In contrast, leaks indicate that OpenAI has decided to temporarily scale back its hardware ambitions, likely due to a significant rise in manufacturing costs.
Initially, rumors talked about the company working on a small device in the form of a pendant or pen, which is in line with the statements of CEO Sam Altman, who described the upcoming device as being “quieter and smoother” than a smartphone, especially after the legendary designer Jony Ive, the former head of design at Apple, joined the project.

But it seems that plans changed later, as OpenAI chose a simpler and more realistic path at the current stage, by developing smart earphones powered by artificial intelligence. According to circulating information, these headphones may bear the name Dime, with it expected to be released on the market before the end of this year.
As for the more advanced version of the product, it is likely to see the light later, after the HBM crisis, which is currently affecting many advanced hardware projects, improves.
