Nintendo made a new and important step in supporting third-party games with the Final Fantasy 7 Remake demo on Switch 2. A technical analysis from Digital Foundry revealed that Nintendo’s version is no less good than the Xbox Series S and PS4 versions, and even surpasses them in some aspects, with only limited concessions compared to the PS5 and Xbox Series
The device handled the game’s requirements well, as the frame rate maintained approximately 30 frames per second with fewer stutters than previous offerings.
Despite recording some drops in portable mode, the experience remained very close to PS4 performance. At the image level, adopting DLSS technology helped provide surprisingly sharp scenes, making the version compete with even the most powerful devices.
In portable mode, the resolution was increased from 720p to 1080p with the use of dynamic resolution, which sometimes led to the smoothness of some textures, in addition to noticing a higher density of blur effects that affected the clarity of shadows. However, the higher resolution, especially when connected to a monitor, helped hide most of these shortcomings.
The analysis showed that the Switch 2 version often looked visually cleaner than the Xbox Series S version, despite running the latter at 1440p, a superiority again attributed to DLSS compared to the TAA technology used in Unreal Engine 4.
It seems that allocating a development team to each platform, as confirmed by series director Naoki Hamaguchi, has yielded clear results, with anticipation of what the more ambitious Rebirth version will offer in the future.
