Pearl Abyss has confirmed that its game Crimson Desert contains some AI-generated images, although most of the game’s artwork is handmade.
Disclosure of the use of artificial intelligence did not arrive before the release date, which prompted player Extra_Lingonberry_79 to submit a refund request via Steam after four hours of playing.
Valve denied the request on the grounds that the gameplay length exceeded the redemption limit (two hours), although the AI disclosure appeared after release.
This decision sparked controversy among players about the extent of developers’ commitment to disclosing the use of artificial intelligence in games. Some believe that the temporary images did not affect the gaming experience, while others consider that there is justification for requesting a refund.
