Apple is heading to launch the first foldable phone in its history under the name iPhone Fold later this year, and current leaks indicate that the most prominent feature that will distinguish the device is its unconventional form factor. The phone will be wider than most competitors when folded, while it opens directly in landscape mode.

When fully opened, the iPhone Fold will offer a more upright and less square aspect ratio than most foldable phones out there today. Samsung’s Galaxy Z TriFold is an exception in this comparison, as when opened it turns into a tablet measuring approximately 10 inches, but it relies on a completely different double folding mechanism.

Compared to the Galaxy Z Fold7, the iPhone Fold appears smaller when opened, but in return it appears more elongated and less square-shaped, giving it a different character in daily use and viewing experience.

Ultimately, these comparisons show how unique the design of the upcoming iPhone Fold is, as we have never seen a phone with a completely similar form factor. However, this distinction may not last long, as rumors indicate that Samsung and Oppo have already begun working on developing foldable phones with a wider, book-style design, in anticipation of the great success that the new Apple phone may achieve.
