Issues with the Windows 11 KB5074109 January 2026 security update have worsened significantly in recent days. After Microsoft recommended that some users remove the update due to black screens, applications crashing, and Outlook freezing, a new, more complex problem began to appear, as the update itself fails to roll back with error 0x800f0905.

According to a recent report from Windows Central, Windows 11 devices when trying to delete update KB5074109 encountered an error related to the System Components and Servicing Stack, halting the entire removal process.

As a result, users find themselves stuck between two difficult choices: continue using a buggy update, or resort to more radical repair solutions.

At this time, Microsoft has not released an official solution for this issue. However, support experts and some technical guides have suggested several temporary solutions, including restoring the system to an earlier point before installing the update, or using the Windows Update repair tool that keeps files and apps, and then trying to remove the update again. Of course, it is always recommended to take a full backup before performing any of these steps.

In the same vein, reports of other issues related to update KB5074109 are still increasing.

Users with older devices have complained of a crash in S3 sleep mode, where the screen goes black without the device actually entering power saving mode, forcing them to do a forced reboot. I also continued to receive application launch errors with code 0x803F8001, as well as Outlook Classic freezes, especially when mail archives were stored within OneDrive or other cloud folders.

In light of this confusing situation, Microsoft still lists KB5074109 as the official security update for January 2026, while acknowledging several issues and recommending uninstallation for severely affected users.

But the irony is that some users cannot even perform the rollback operation without encountering additional errors. Until an official fix is released, users without obvious issues are advised to wait and avoid any unnecessary changes.
