The Directorate of Health Affairs in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate issued its periodical, including a number of important instructions for diabetics, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, as part of its keenness to preserve citizens’ health and promote health awareness.
The Directorate of Health Affairs in Kafr El-Sheikh stressed that fasting for a diabetic patient represents a health challenge that requires accurate medical evaluation and appropriate preparation, stressing the need to adhere to medical recommendations to avoid any possible complications and ensure safe and stable fasting.
The guidelines included emphasizing regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, especially before breakfast and suhoor or when feeling any abnormal symptoms, while avoiding breakfast with sweetened juices and high-sugar Ramadan drinks.
The Directorate also stressed the necessity of breaking the fast immediately if the blood sugar level falls below 70 mg/dl or rises above 300 mg/dl, or when symptoms of low or high blood sugar appear, in order to preserve the patient’s safety.
The bulletin advised dividing meals between breakfast and suhoor, and making sure to eat a balanced suhoor rich in fiber and protein, in addition to drinking 8 to 10 cups of water distributed between breakfast and suhoor to avoid dehydration.
It also recommended practicing light physical activity, such as walking two hours after breakfast, while avoiding violent exertion while fasting, stressing the importance of consulting a doctor before beginning fasting to adjust medication doses and assess health ability to fast, and not to modify doses or stop treatment without medical advice.
The Health Directorate concluded its bulletin by emphasizing that adherence to medical instructions represents the key to healthy and safe fasting, wishing citizens continued health and wellness during the holy month.
