Italy arrests people on charges of involvement in financing Hamas

Italian prosecutors said that the authorities arrested 9 people on suspicion of involvement in financing the Hamas movement through charities based in Italy, in a coordinated operation between anti-mafia and anti-terrorism units.

The public prosecutor in the northern Italian city of Genoa explained in a statement that the suspects are accused of “belonging to and financing” the Hamas movement, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States, and the European Union, adding that investigations revealed the transfer of about seven million euros collected over the past two years for ostensibly humanitarian purposes to parties linked to the movement, with assets worth more than eight million euros confiscated.

Italian police said in a separate statement that officers confiscated 1.08 million euros in cash found at the headquarters of a pro-Palestinian charity and in the homes of the suspects, along with propaganda materials supportive of Hamas, Israel’s main adversary in the two-year Gaza war.

For her part, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked the authorities for what she described as a “particularly complex and important operation” that revealed Hamas’ financing through “so-called charitable organizations.”

For its part, the Israeli Ministry of Defense said on Sunday that the Israeli intelligence and counter-terrorism services contributed by providing “information and evidence” to the Italian law enforcement authorities through agreed upon channels.

According to the Hebrew publication Yedioth Ahronoth, Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz touched on the arrest of suspects in Italy on charges of collecting millions of euros for Hamas, saying: Hamas terrorists and anyone who seeks to harm us do not find and will not find a safe haven, neither in the Middle East nor in Europe.

He added that the Israeli authorities, including Military Intelligence and the General Security Service (Shin Bet), provided the Italian authorities with information and evidence as part of an investigation targeting Hamas’ infrastructure in the country, and according to him, Muhammad Hanoun, a prominent figure in Hamas’ leadership in Europe, was arrested in Italy.
