Amr Moussa, former Secretary-General of… League of Arab StatesThe Palestinian leadership urged the Palestinian leadership to expedite the announcement of the organization of parliamentary and presidential elections during the next year, stressing that this step has become “essential and necessary” to take advantage of the increasing international transformations in support of the Palestinians’ right to establish their state and self-determination.

Amr Moussa: The Palestinian Authority must start new elections next year

Moussa said, during television statements, that the Palestinian issue has not been absent from international discussion tables as some believe, noting that global meetings and conferences in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia still pay great attention to the Palestinian issue.

Moussa stressed that the “increasing recognition of the Palestinian state” by major countries around the world, along with developments in the political scene inside Israel, creates an important moment that the Palestinians must seize by renewing the legitimacy of their institutions and producing “a new generation of leaders.”

He explained that the Israeli elections expected at the end of next year will change the features of the scene, and therefore “the Palestinians have the right” to organize parallel elections to shape their political future, considering that the world will stand by them if they take this step, and will not allow it to be prevented.

Moussa pointed to the possibility of prominent Palestinian figures such as Marwan Barghouti running as candidates, stressing that holding the elections themselves, regardless of who wins, would give the Palestinians a “new political window” and return them to the forefront of international attention.

Moussa concluded that the Palestinians “do not have much now,” and that a political initiative of the size of elections may be the only way to return the Palestinian issue to the path of solution, with increasing Arab and international support.
