The team, Engineer Kamel Al-Wazir, Minister of Transport, and Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, conducted an inspection field tour of the Jabal Al-Galala area in the Suez Governorate, to find out the actual steps to begin exploiting it and using the mountain to establish projects to generate electricity from wind energy.
The two ministers began the tour by inspecting a number of sites at an altitude of 1,280 metres, with wind speeds reaching 15 metres/second, which are considered among the highest wind speeds for generating electrical energy.
It is noteworthy that President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi witnessed the opening of the Gabal El-Zeit station in July 2018, adding about one percent of the total production capacity in Egypt, which leads to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 49,400 tons compared to fossil fuel electricity generation stations with similar production capacity.
The project aims to increase the production of electrical energy and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, which will contribute to meeting the people’s growing need for electricity and alleviating the symptoms of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and thus will support economic and social development and environmental preservation in Egypt.
The importance of JICA’s support for the project is due to the station’s contribution to reducing climate change and preserving the environment, which is Japan’s commitment to the world, and is in line with Japanese official development aid policies.
