Today, Sunday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed the Iraqi government’s surprise at the statements of the United States Ambassador to Turkey and the American Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, regarding the internal situation in Iraq.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein met today with the US President’s special envoy to the Syrian file, Thomas Barrack, on the sidelines of the Doha Forum.

The statement added that the Iraqi minister expressed during the meeting the Iraqi government’s astonishment at the recent statements of the American envoy regarding the internal situation in Iraq, explaining that it was important to clarify the vision in another way that reflects the reality of the political development and relative stability achieved in Iraq.

Hussein stressed that the choices of the Iraqi people are respected, and that democracy and the federal system are established in the constitution, and have become an established path with no alternative, despite the challenges.

For his part, the American envoy stated that the American administration views the Iraqi experience with respect, and that what he stated concerns the American experience in Iraq, according to the statement.

Park raises controversy over Iraq

Barak had stated in an interview with the Emirati newspaper The National that the American experience in Iraq should not be repeated, as it had depleted about $3 trillion and hundreds of thousands of lives, pointing out that Iran had filled the void left by Washington there.

Park claimed that the United States pushed to impose a type of republic on the deeply divided Sunni, Shiite, and Kurdish reality in Iraq, which led to the creation of a federal system similar to the experience of Yugoslavia.

The American envoy considered that this division allowed Iran to advance and fill the void, saying, “Iran is advancing and filling the void. We have created this crazy structure in which the militias already have power over Parliament.”

Barak described Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani as a very good leader who possesses capabilities, but he does not have any authority. He cannot form a coalition because the Popular Mobilization Forces and other components are obstructing the scene.

Barak had sparked controversy on several previous occasions, because of his talk about the internal situation in the Arab countries, and he made statements against the countries of Syria and Lebanon and the internal political fluctuations these countries were witnessing, which made him subject to widespread criticism.
