The fish wealth in South Sinai Governorate is one of the most important economic resources. It is considered an economic treasure and wealth for the poor, especially in cheap popular fish, and open job opportunities for young people and a source of livelihood for the families of fishing workers.
South Sinai Governorate pays great attention to its development to support the local economy and provide job opportunities, and this wealth depends mainly on the fisheries of the Red Sea and the Gulfs of Suez and Aqaba, in addition to modern fish farming projects.
Popular fish
The governorate is famous for the diversity of its fish, and the most prominent species caught are couscous, bagha, and shuk, which citizens accept for their quality and reasonable price, in addition to other desirable species that include shahar, grouper, sahliya, macaroni, and hareed.
Fishing areas and ports
South Sinai has a long coastline extending approximately 600 km, providing diverse fishing areas. It has the fishing port in the city of Tur Sinai, which is a vital center for fishing operations in the governorate and serves hundreds of fishermen.
There are other fishing places in Ras Sidr and Abu Zneima, and another area that witnesses daily fishing activity and areas for diving and fishing in Nabq Bay in Sharm El Sheikh.
Diving and recreational fishing areas, as there are many areas off the coast of the governorate that are considered the best in the world for diving tourism and fishing with equipment, such as Al Ali, Al Majida and Al Zerba areas.
Cooperative Fishing Center
The foundation stone was laid for the project of a cooperative fishing center, an ice factory, and a fish distribution center in the city of Al-Tur, with the aim of supporting fishermen and developing traditional fishing tools.
Fish farms were established in various areas, including mountainous and desert areas in central Sinai, to increase local production of tilapia and other fish.
Support fishermen
The governorate provides quotas of subsidized fish to citizens, and encourages the use of efficient fishing boats, including chinchilla boats. These efforts aim to maximize the benefit of the governorate’s enormous natural potential and achieve self-sufficiency in protein, which is considered one of the most important types of protein for humans.
