Rev. Dr. Andre Zaki, President, confirmed Evangelical denomination In Egypt, the Church Building Law issued in 2016 is considered one of the most important laws that brought about a radical transformation in the file of places of worship, and contributed significantly to codifying the conditions of churches and facilitating dealing with this file after decades of complexity.
Head of the Evangelical Community: The law on building churches is the latest historic change
Zaki explained, during television statements, that the Evangelical community includes about 1,500 local churches, of which only 500 churches were licensed before the issuance of the law, noting that after the issuance of the law, requests were submitted to legalize the status of 1,070 unlicensed churches, in addition to 1,800 conference and retreat houses that were also covered by the law.
He added that the latest official reports indicate that the status of 613 churches and conference houses has been legalized so far, pointing out that this number was achieved in only 7 to 8 years, compared to 200 years during which only 500 churches were licensed, which reflects the scale of the achievement achieved.
The head of the Evangelical community expected that all churches in Egypt would be legalized by the year 2030. This would be the first time in Egypt’s ancient and modern history that all churches would become fully legalized, considering this an important shift in the path of citizenship and consolidating societal stability.
Pastor Andre Zaki pointed out that the country witnessed a tangible development in the citizenship file during the era of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, explaining that this development was reflected in important legislation, including the church building law, the personal status law, and the Evangelical Endowments Authority law, in addition to serious dealing with various societal challenges.
He stressed that places of worship play an essential role in building generations that believe in love, peace and tolerance, expressing his appreciation for the Egyptian state and its leadership, stressing that what has been achieved in this file represents a major step towards strengthening the values of citizenship and coexistence.
