Electricity spokesman: Power theft is the most serious cause of commercial loss and harms the stability of the network
Abdel Ghani explained, during television statements, that the ministry aims primarily to improve the quality of service provided to citizens, and achieve financial sustainability for the electricity sector, in addition to the economic operation of generating stations, reducing fuel consumption, and expanding reliance on renewable energies within the national energy strategy.
Abdel-Ghani pointed out that the state took a decision in July 2024 to install code meters unconditionally for everyone who requested them, which resulted in the installation of about 2 million code meters within one year, explaining that these meters do not grant any legal rights to establishments, but they aim to calculate actual consumption and prevent illegal seizure of electricity.
He added that the Ministry has intensified the work of judicial police teams and inspection committees at the republic level, to monitor violations and issue reports, pointing out that reports of power theft of huge sums were seized, including a report worth 211 million pounds from a factory, which reflects that the phenomenon has become deliberate and organized.
The Ministry’s spokesman confirmed that these developments necessitated amending Electricity Law No. 87 of 2015, with the aim of preserving the rights of committed citizens and protecting the huge investments that the state has pumped into the electricity sector, which exceeded 2 trillion pounds over the past years.
