Commented the team engineer Kamel Al-Wazir The Minister of Transport, on the increase in railway and metro train ticket prices that was announced on Thursday evening, saying: The salaries of railway and metro workers must also increase, and raising ticket prices is a natural need.

The Minister of Transport added, during a television interview on the Al-Hekaya program with journalist Amr Adeeb, that the minimum wage has doubled three times during the recent period, and that railway and metro workers have the right to benefit from these increases.

He continued: When the price of a liter of diesel was 4.5 pounds, and now I am taking it for 20.5 pounds, an increase of about 4 times, I still have to bear this difference and increase the income of the workers.

The minister pointed out that the Tunnel Authority and the Railway Authority are economic bodies that spend on themselves, as they are a service body that serves citizens.

Kamel Al-Wazir explained that the increase in income for the railway and the metro comes from tickets and advertisements, and we are forced to pay the burdens of the loans and installments that the government provided us in paying the down payment, adding: We had no solution other than increasing ticket prices so that we could continue to provide good service to the citizen.

The Minister added that the costs of maintaining the train and metro fleet witnessed a noticeable increase as a result of the increase in the prices of spare parts, as well as the ongoing development and efficiency work of a number of lines, which requires additional financial resources to maintain the level of service.
