A young man with a rare disease gradually loses his sight

Hossam Hassan told Cairo 24 that he was born with a genetic eye disease known as Retinitis Pigmentosa, as a result of a mutation in the RPE65 gene, which leads to severe visual impairment that may lead to permanent loss of vision in advanced stages.

He added that in 2023, Hossam conducted a genetic analysis outside Egypt, where the presence of the mutation in the RPE65 gene was confirmed, and the results proved that he qualified for the modern gene therapy Luxturna, which is considered one of the latest specialized treatments for this disease.

Hossam explained that the cost of treatment amounts to about 850,000 US dollars, or about 42 million Egyptian pounds, which is beyond his means, which puts Hossam in front of a major financial barrier to saving his sight.

Hossam demands that treatment be provided at state expense, or that an official accredited account be opened to collect donations to organize a funding campaign for his treatment.
