The Sudanese army announced that it was able to break the siege imposed on the city of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan state, following violent clashes with a number of militias.

The past few days witnessed violent clashes between the Sudanese army and the Popular Movement and Rapid Support militias to end the strict siege imposed by the Rapid Support Alliance and the Popular Movement.

The Sudanese army breaks the siege on the capital of South Kordofan

Since the first months of the outbreak of war in 2023, Kadugli has been suffering from a stifling siege imposed by the SPLM forces and their ally, the Rapid Support Forces. In February of last year, the army was able to connect the city to Dilling, the second largest city in South Kordofan. However, the Rapid Support Forces and the SPLM returned last December to isolate the two cities after taking control of the strategic intersection area. This had a negative impact on Kadugli’s situation.

The prolonged siege imposed on the capital of South Kordofan resulted in extremely harsh humanitarian conditions, in light of the lack of food and medicine, which prompted thousands of civilians to flee in a harsh exodus towards North Kordofan, and others preferred to move towards popular areas in the Nuba Mountains.

The Sudanese army drones continued to carry out air attacks continuously targeting the locations of the Rapid Support and Popular Movement deployment in the intersection area, in addition to Al-Dashul and Kiqa Al-Khail, in a move aimed at paving the way for the infantry teams to advance towards Kadugli and end the siege.
