Floods in Vietnam leave at least 90 dead and 12 missing
According to what was published on the British Broadcasting Corporation, the mountainous province of Dak Lak was severely affected, with more than 60 deaths recorded since November 16, and the floods are the latest extreme weather event to hit Vietnam in recent months, after Typhoons Kalmaiji and Bulawi struck the country weeks apart.
Officials said that about 258,000 people were without electricity on Sunday morning, and parts of major highways and railway lines were closed, and military and police resources were mobilized to provide assistance in the most affected areas.
The Vietnamese government said that the most serious impacts were observed in five provinces of Quang Ngai, Gia Lai, Dak Lac, Khanh Hoa, and Lam Dong, concentrated in south and south-central Vietnam, where the rain level exceeded 1.5 meters, or 5 feet, in several areas as of Friday, and some areas exceeded the level of 5.2 meters, a level that the country has not witnessed since 1993. The rainfall is expected to ease in the coming days, and Vietnam has become more vulnerable to extreme weather events due to Climate change caused by human activities, making hurricanes stronger and more frequent.
